The Antibiotic Paradox: Use Less, Prepare More

In recognition of World AMR Awareness Week, we are hosting a panel discussion on antimicrobial resistance in collaboration with The Stockholm Project.

AMR is an accelerating threat to health, business and resilience, and deserves increased actions and transatlantic cooperation.

The discussion will focus on the need to fight the treat of AMR and the challenge of securing reliable access to effective antibiotics, while using them as sparingly as possible. It will also cover how to strengthen antibiotic preparedness and how cooperation between Sweden, Europe and the United States can strengthen the response to the growing risks of AMR. It will draw on lessons from the war in Ukraine about the importance of AMR surveillance, prevention and international cooperation in times of crisis. Panelists will also discuss what businesses, governments, healthcare systems, and the civil society need to do together.

Access to effective antibiotics is part of critical societal infrastructure. Antibiotics make surgery, intensive care, transplantation, cancer treatment and the safe management of ordinary infections possible. In a crisis or in wartime, they are just as essential to treating the wounded and keeping healthcare running. That makes antibiotic preparedness a question of national resilience and total defense, as well as public health. Preserving the effectiveness of antibiotics, requires increased international cooperation across healthcare, governments and industry, with implications for innovation, financing of the R&D of new antibiotics, supply security and long-term preparedness.

The panel includes Jenny Hellman, Head of the Preparedness Pharmaceuticals and Logistics Unit at the Public Health Agency of Sweden; Anna Sjöblom, Director of ReAct Europe an independent global network founded in 2005 that works on antibiotic resistance; and Jonas Fuks, Access & Value and Pricing Senior Manager at Pfizer and engaged in PLATINEA, the Swedish platform for improved access to antibiotics.

Because combating AMR and building resilient biomedical supply chains are recognized as shared priorities under the U.S.–Sweden Technology Prosperity Deal, this panel is a key part of AmCham Sweden’s ongoing work to support the agreement's implementation.
