Stockholm’s booming startup scene is struggling to recruit from within the country’s borders. The growing shortage of tech talent has forced Stockholm companies to increase their cross-border recruitment. This is a time consuming and sometimes difficult process that needs to improve, why the Mayor of Stockholm puts forward a number of proposals to facilitate for international talents to establish in Stockholm.
The lack of qualified labor is not just the case for the IT sector in Stockholm, but goes for many industries. At the same time, global competition for talent grows stronger by the day. The insight that diverse teams create better results is another reason for companies to look to cross-border recruitment as a strategy. These are some of the reasons why the Mayor of Stockholm is determined to facilitate for international talents to establish in Stockholm.
“It is crucial for the city's growth and economy that companies can recruit the right skills. We need to become better at creating the conditions for international talent and their families in Stockholm. Therefore, I am working towards opening an International House on site in Stockholm as early as 2020”, says Anna König Jerlmyr, Mayor of Stockholm.
An International House is a hub where the City of Stockholm, together with businesses, educational providers and government agencies, such as the Swedish Tax Agency and the Social Insurance Agency, can offer guidance through a “one stop shop” solution.
“The international competition for talent is increasing and we need to improve the process for the individual as well as the for the recruiting company. Our tech scene has called for faster onboarding and a smoother migration process. An International House would be an important step towards creating the best possible reception of international talents in Stockholm," says Anna Gissler, CEO of Invest Stockholm.
Other proposals by the Mayor involve inviting international students to joint labor market days together with the business community and the universities in the Stockholm region. The ambition is also to make it easier to set up and get jobs or training for the accompanying partners.
