Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Demonstrations planned in central Stockholm for Saturday, Nov. 12, 2016
There is a march/demonstration planned for central Stockholm on Nov. 12, 2016. The march, organized by the Swedish Resistance Movement, is planned to begin 11:00 am at Kungsträdgården, proceed south toward Gamla Stan at 12 noon, arrive at Mynttorget at 13:00 and conclude at 16:00. Police estimate this march to contain about 200 people. A counter-demonstration is planned for Sergels Torg from 10:00 to 13:30 the same day, possibly numbering up to 5,000 people.
Swedish Police have informed us of the potential for confrontation at these demonstrations. Past demonstrations involving this group have turned violent. The Embassy urges American citizens to avoid these areas during the above times.
Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence. You should avoid areas of demonstrations, and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.
Review your personal security plans; remain aware of your surroundings, including local events; and monitor local news stations for updates. Maintain a high level of vigilance and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security.
