Intellectual property rights are a central part of the modern economy. They are fundamental for investment in R&D, innovation, brands and the progression of the value-added chain. Respect for intellectual property remains a central part of the modern society to the benefit of both businesses and consumers.
However intellectual property rights are sometimes claimed to have a negative impact on society and there is a growing tendency by regulators to interfere with intellectual property rights in various ways. What are these challenges about – and what are their consequences for the social and economic value of intellectual property rights?
