The Boston Consulting Group's Baltic Sea Report & Race for the Baltic

In 2013, The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) partnered with World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) with the aim to address the major challenges facing the Baltic Sea from a business perspective. A report was developed that identifies the tremendous economic development opportunity that is possible by investing in clean and healthy waters within the region.

BCG partnered with Zennström Philanthropies and focused on how local economies can smartly capture these economic benefits. In 2015, BCG launched the follow-up report which indicates 900,000 jobs that are at stake in 2030. Fredrik Lind, Senior Partner and Sanna Dahlgren, Associate from BCG will present the key findings of the report.

In order to accelerate the actions that are needed to restore the sea to a good environmental status, Zennström Philanthropies' "Race for the Baltic" and over a dozen partners have developed the "Baltic Sea City Accelerator Program." Barbara Jackson, Director, Race for the Baltic, will explain how this program offers coaching by experts and exposure to technical and financial solutions to assist a group of municipalities solve their local water challenges.

The Baltic Sea is one of the world's most polluted sea areas. More than 85 million people live in the catchment area, and more than 55 million people live near the coastline or along rivers which flow into the sea.

In 1997, the Bank of Åland established an Environmental Account with the goal of enabling the bank's customers to contribute to a more sustainable world through their savings. Twice a year, the account is open for organizations, companies and individuals to apply for funding in order to support various environmental projects. Since its inception, a total of €1,200,000 has been paid to promote environmental activities.

Anne-Maria Salonius, Director, Finland Business Area Bank of Åland, will explain how programs offered by the bank enable increased engagement, additional contributions and a larger audience presence. These include the coming Baltic Project Member Mastercard aiming to replace any existing card issued by the bank. Fees associated with this card can further help to generate funds that clearly identifies an environmental issue.
